Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds who enjoy playing, climbing and interact. They should spend at least two to three hours every day outside to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They love playing games while listening to music, and learning new tricks. They love going to parks and playgrounds as well as hiking, local restaurants and bars. Apart from being a fun pet they are also great companions for children.
The birds can be quite loud, despite their affection for them. They can also be a nuisance for those living nearby. They are capable of high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which could be a problem in apartments and condos or in close proximity to children who may be frightened by their noise.
Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means males and females are difficult to distinguish. This is why DNA testing is the only reliable method of determining sex. Once the sex of the birds is established, breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to stop performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her were hopeful that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. Sadly, she did not get a chance to return to the sea.
Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by making her perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as a relative, on a plan that would eventually take her to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary located on the west coast of Washington where she could stay for the duration of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive.
